Making money with Google AdSense

What is Google AdSense? It's probably the most significant development in the Internet world for content / advertising based business models. Regardless of what your web site is going to be about, you can more than likely make some money from it using Google AdSense.

A little later we are going to cover search engine advertising - this is basically where you pay a search engine (such as Google) to run your Internet advertisement on the results page when somebody searches for a keyword or set of keywords.

So let's say somebody went to Google and searched for "Dog collars". All the results would come up on the results page. But off to the right hand side of the page, there would be little text advertisements that might say something like:

Dog collars?
Looking for dog collars? Check out
our selection.
www.dogcollarworld.com

The person who took out that ad might have bid 50 cents a click on Google. So when anyone clicks on that ad, Google makes 50 cents and the advertiser (DogCollarWorld.com) pays 50 cents.

"Fascinating", you say "but what the heck does this have to do with me?" Glad you asked.

Let's say you love dogs. You love taking pictures of dogs, you love writing about dogs, and you love talking about dogs. Now, let's say you want to start a web site about dogs for your business (remember, do something you are passionate about).

Well, you can sign up for a Google AdSense account, get some code to place on your dog web site, and then from then on out Google will automatically display text advertisements that are related to whatever that page on your web site is talking about.

So, Google AdSense automatically checks out the text on your web site, sees that it's about dogs, and runs that same DogCollarWorld.com ad. Now, when somebody clicks that ad on your site, you and Google split the money from it. It isn't clear right now exactly how much Google shares with the advertisers (and it probably never will be) but there are indications that it's around 50%.
